First of all, lets talk about the 3 versions of the phone that are available.
There are two dual band GSM versions and a CDMA version. The version of the
phone I am testing is the 900/1800Mhz GSM phone that works pretty much
everywhere but in North America. There is a 850/1900Mhz version for North
America. The 850Mhz band is new in North America and is intended to ease the
transition from TDMA to GSM for many of the network operators there. The last
version is a CDMA 1x device that works on the 800 and 1900Mhz bands. Between the
three available versions, pretty much everybody should be covered. Sadly the GSM
versions are not world GSM capable, but at least the North American market won't
miss out completely like is often the case with other dual band devices.
On a phone like this, the most important,
or
at least most interesting, thing is the display. And the T720 has a great one.
While it might not be quite as beautiful as that of the Samsung SGH-T100, it is
none the less large, bright, and crystal clear (I preferred the contrast to be
adjusted up to 5 instead of the default value of 3). You can comfortably get 11
lines of text on it, if you count the status bar and softkey description areas.
9 if you don't. If you prefer to have the text a big larger, you can reduce that
to 7 lines by configuring the display to "zoom in". Additionally you can use one
of a number of built-in or downloaded pictures as a background image. You can
even specific whether you want the image centered or tiled, just like in
Windows. Really nice, even though I preferred to have no background image at
all. One note, there is a piece of dust or glue or something on the lower right
portion of the screen on my test unit that you can see in some of the closeup
photos later on. I worry that there might be a general dust problem later. As of
yet I can not be sure.
The ringtones for the T720 can be purchased
